About Me
Immersive sound artworks, standalone installations, and intricate soundscapes
Karen Monid is a multi-award winning sound artist whose work explores the imaginative power of space, storytelling, and perception.
Karen creates immersive sound artworks, standalone installations, and intricate soundscapes worldwide. Her work is deeply informed by nature, history, and heritage, including the reconstruction of lost or fragile soundscapes. She has worked extensively with spoken word and languages, her work being broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and commissioned by organisations such as English Heritage and The National Trust. She began her career in theatre sound production in and expanded into scenic and architectural projection, developing a rare combined expertise in both fields.
Her distinctive skillset has led to collaborations with international projection artist Ross Ashton under The Projection Studio on major projects, such as the London Olympics, where she created a 200-metre wide sound installation along the banks of the Thames for projections onto the Houses of Parliament, and a series of large scale site-specific works inside York Minster. They have also been co-directors on the establishment of two light art festivals: Napa Lighted Art Festival (California, U.S.) and Boston Brilliance (UK).
Karen collaborates widely with scientists and academics. In recognition of her work with history, heritage and soundscapes, in 2024 she was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of Durham University’s Institute of Medieval & Early Modern Studies.
She teaches, gives talks and writes articles on the integral partnership and power of sound in field of light art and projection mapping, along with the critical dynamic of audience relationship for such works. Most recently she has been exploring the role of podcasts in sound art and design.
She holds a First Class BA (Hons) in Humanities with Art History and Music, as well as a BTEC HND in Technical Theatre from the Central School of Speech and Drama (University of London), where she focused on creative sound.
